Fields of Study: An Introduction to Somatic Movement with Julie Mulvihill & Tina Kambour with facilitators Hannah Ashford & Paige Fischer

DESCRIPTION: Feeling disconnected from your body? Are you stuck in your movement practice? Join us for an afternoon workshop and experience a different way of connecting to your body through gentle movement and mindful connection.

What is Somatics? Somatics is a field within bodywork and movement studies that emphasizes the mind-body connection and internal experience. Simply put, somatics is about bringing attention to your movement patterns, whether big or small, and your internal sensations as you move through them. Somatic techniques are commonly used in bodywork, psychotherapy, dance, and spiritual practices.

PLEASE NOTE: One does not need to be a dancer or advanced mover to participate in this workshop. Movers from all walks of life are welcome!

OUR SOMATICS TEACHER & THEIR PRACTICES:

Julie Mulvihill, Alexander Technique
The Alexander Technique is a method that works to change movement habits in our everyday activities. It is a simple and practical method for improving ease and freedom of movement, balance, support and coordination. The technique teaches the use of the appropriate amount of effort for a particular activity, giving you more energy for all your activities. It is not a series of treatments or exercises, but rather a reeducation of the mind and body. The Alexander Technique is a method which helps a person discover a new balance in the body by releasing unnecessary tension. It can be applied to sitting, lying down, standing, walking, lifting, and other daily activities. (Definition from alexandertechnique.com)

Tina Kambour, BodyMind Dancing
BodyMind Dancing™ is a unique synthesis of some of the finest forms of somatic education: the language of human movement – Laban Movement Analysis and Bartenieff Fundamentals which teach movement efficiency and Body-Mind Centering® which helps to bring consciousness to all parts of the body. As a whole, BodyMind Dancing™ is an anatomically informed dance experience that integrates technical skill building exercises with improvisation. Each student has an experience that both invites introspection and awareness of self while meeting the best practices in fitness. (Definition from dynamicembodiment.org)
